How to Become a Security Guard in Alberta
Security work is a licensed profession under Alberta’s Security Services and Investigators Act. To qualify, you must be at least 18 years old, legally eligible to work in Canada, pass a criminal background check, and meet English proficiency (CLB Level 5).
Licensing takes four steps:
Complete ABST training — the Alberta Basic Security Training is a mandatory 40-hour course accredited by the Alberta Solicitor General, covering law, patrol procedures, emergency response, and report writing.
Pass the provincial exam — a score of 80% or higher is required.
Apply for your licence — submit your ABST certificate, background check, and application ($100 fee, valid 2 years).
Start working — once approved, you are legally licensed to work as a security guard anywhere in Alberta.
